This past week I went and splurged on the new Blackberry Tour. Hell of a phone, I must say. Now, while it’s only been 5 days, I can thoroughly understand why they refer to the devices as Crackberries. Highly fucking addicting, to say the least. Thanks to this new device, I gained a renewed love of browsing the web from a mobile phone. Something that I’d been finding myself doing less and less from my old LG Voyager. This got me to thinking that I should do a little fiddling with my site to make it mobile web friendly.

So the first thing I did was to add the appropriate plug-ins to my site, in order to make it see whether the visitor was accessing the site on a computer or a phone, in order to provide them with a more appropriate rendering of the site. For all the tech-challenged people out there, while a website might look good on your computer, you’d struggle to read that same site on a mobile device without an alternate template catering to the smaller screen. So that’s been all taken care of now. However, one thing is still bugging me.

See, mobile browsers as they currently stand, don’t have the capability to render Flash video, which is what all the videos I post are. That means that when, and if, you come to my sight on a mobile device, and hope to see the videos I post, you’re just going to see big empty spaces.

Now I did some searching, and then I did some more. I consider myself a rather adept ‘googler’, but I just couldn’t find anything to suit my needs. As it stands now, the only options, as far as I can tell, would be to say ‘screw it’ and wait for the Skyfire browser to be released to all mobile platforms (it’ll have flash capabilities). Or I could post links to the mobile versions of the videos in question. However, neither of those really satisfy me.

So to any tech savvy people out there, I pose the following question:

Is there a better way that I’m just not finding?

I’m running WordPress and couldn’t, for the life of me, find any plugins that address this issue other than actually placing a link that states “mobile users click here for video” option. Sure, that’s easy, but I’m lazy and would rather have an even more simplistic way of resolving the issue. Not to mention that I’d rather not go back and edit a shit load of posts. So if anyone happens to know of a plug-in or an easier work around, please drop me a line or leave me a comment. I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thanks to the use of Cufon, I was able to add a little class to the site. Cufon replaces boring old text with any font just about any font you can find.

I’d decided that the headlines of each post looked rather bland in their use of just standard old Arial font. Originally I tried to implement sIFR as a means to alter the font, but found that there was a bit of a lag in the loading of each headline. Cufon cut that lag down dramatically.

The verdict on Cufon: highly recommended, two thumbs up.

Just bear with me, I’m moving moving the site over to a new set-up. Just this week, I learned how to create WordPress templates. Considering what flexibility WordPress offers (not that my site needs it right now), I figured I might as well migrate the site over. Originally I was powering it with the help of Blogger.com, which is a perfectly fine set-up, but WordPress will dramatically simplify any future changes I make to the site (design, layout, expansion, etc.).

So I’ll leave you with this holiday message from Jon Lajoie, one of my new favorite funnymen.

Over the next week I’ll be redoing the site design again. Yes, I said again. Seems like every four to six months I get bored of looking at the current design and need to make a change. Well, either that or I learn new little tricks in my quest to become an HTML/CSS guru, and just can’t help but to incorporate them into my site.

So stay tuned. I’m pretty excited about this new look I’m working on. I just need to make a few more tweaks and get it up to snuff. With any luck at all this new design will pass the test on HTML & CSS validation. Validation is something I’ve been preoccupied with since getting the BKB Design Group site to validate. I’ve become obsessed with seeing the little green check mark on my HTML validation add-on for Firefox. So what can I say, now I feel compelled to validate everything. Although using the blogger.com code to keep up my blog and my home page might throw a wrench into making the site 100% validated, but I won’t know for sure until I get it all setup.

We shall see…..

If you’ve come by the site over the last week or so, you might have noticed that there’s been the occasional spotting of a sign on the main page that says “Server work in progress…..”. Well the reason behind the sign was that I was in the process of switching hosting companies. Therefore I was attempting my first shot at site migration. Not quite as seamless of a process as I’d expected. Some of the work that I ended up doing was completely foreign to me, and after countless time on google and searching help forums, I finally got it all figured out.

So now the site is firmly planted with the new company and I’m happy as can be. When you factor in all the extras that go into the new hosting package, allowing for multiple sites to be easily controlled and a few new bells and whistles on the back end, it’s well worth the slightly steeper price.

So, I’m currently working on three additional sites for people, as well as a new site for myself to sort of take the place of all the bitching, moaning, and opinion dishing I do on here. That way I can tone down boroski.com a bit in terms of subject matter, yet still have a place to do all the venting I want with minimal chance of getting the proverbial egg on my face from any potential clients.

That’s all for now, just wanted to put any questions to rest about just what in the hell was going on with the ‘Server work’ sign. So, nothing to see here, back to what you were doing.

I’ve decided to switch my main page to blogger. Makes editing it much simpler, especially considering that I can now do it from anywhere. Plus it frees up my actual blog area because of the…..ah screw it, I know you’re not really THAT interested about my whats and whys. Let’s just say that all in all it makes my simple site that much simpler.

Baseball season is in full swing and I couldn’t be happier. For all you baseball nuts out there who also enjoy an occasional video game, let me give you a quick tip. Buy MLB 2k7!!! It’s quite possibly the one of the best baseball games…..and games…..that I’ve played in quite a long time. Great graphics, great playability, and incredibly addicting. So between games on TV, games on the 360, and fantasy baseball, I’ve managed to immerse myself in America’s Pastime. It’s almost like being in heaven. Granted, heaven apparently has yard work as well, since I’ve been slowly but surely getting the yard, here at the house, beautified. I’m sure I’ll post a few photos of the progress in the photo area, so you can see the fruits of my labor as it evolves.

I’d love to stay and chit-chat, but duty calls and believe it or not, I have things to see and people to do, as they say. So on that note…..

~Enjoy

I’ve been tinkering with photoshop. Hence the new graphic at the top of the page. I’ve also done some searching for fonts and have tweaked a few out. You’ll notice that the titles on the other pages are all new creations. This is partly due to my wanting to learn a bit more about the graphical part of web design, and also because I’m playing with ideas for a website I’m putting together for some friends of an online game I play. Oddly enough, once I start tinkering around, it becomes impossible to break away from the work. It’s amazing to see just how much you can alter something just by changing one little aspect. Does this mean I’m a photoshop junky? Well not yet, but I’m slowly working to get there. The good news for all my friends in that soon they’ll begin finding pictures of themselves in places they’ve never been, and doing things, that they’d never dream of.

In other news:

Offices are not as sanitary as restaurants. Weird, but true. My reasoning being, that during the 10+ years I worked in a restaurant, I got sick (cold or flu) exactly twice. In my 3 years in office land, I’ve gotten sick 5 damn times already. Number five currently has its grip on me, and I’m borderline miserable. Then again, it’s not so bad I guess. I used the day I had off of work to sit my sick ass on the couch and do a bit of work on the ol’ site. It could have been worse I suppose.

Now I get the guilty pleasure of watching Dateline’s “To Catch A Predator”. This may be the biggest train wreck TV program outside of the early rounds of American Idol. How stupid can these guys be, some even reference the program in their chats? Then again, how stupid can these types of wack-jobs be in general. The news is chalked full of the busting of internet predators, yet even with all the publicity, these jerk-offs are still at it. Then again, people are arrested for murder every day and yet there are still new killers born every minute. Maybe one day we can just rid the jail time that’s handed to these online predators and go straight to castration with a rusty butterknife….sans anesthetic and antiseptic. Hmm, that might be the feel-good thought of the week, eh?

That being said….off I go, to catch the rest of this riveting episode, so….

~Enjoy

Pitchers and catchers have reported for spring training. Hence the joy I’m feeling about spring time. What more can I possibly say other than: Baseball is back!

In other news:

I’m through with youtube.com hosting on the main page, in case you didn’t notice. I’m going to experiment with placing my own flash in this little spot over on the right. Also, with the addition of the stumble links, I wont have to worry about finding a ton of links for the ‘featured’ section, since they sort of take over what the featured section was all about. It will become a best of the best type of attraction. Ah, evolution, ain’t it great.

Behind the scenes though, there will be a lot going on, not for your eyes, but I’m finally going to do something that I originally intended for the site in general. That is, giving myself a playground to experiment on different facets of design while having a platform to check my work and troubleshoot as I go. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

Speaking of bad deals (yeah that segue sucked), Joe Rogan from TV’s Fear Factor was recently banned from the Comedy Store in L.A. and dropped by his management company thanks to his actions two weeks ago. Rogan was on-stage at the Comedy Store and happened to elude to Carlos Mencia being a renowned joke thief. Mencia, also in the room, took offense and when he went on stage to protest, he was treated to about an hour of Rogan and various other comedians confronting him, specifying bits, and basically destroying every ounce of credibility that Menstealia, as Rogan dubbed him, has. It was truly a glorious site. See the original video of the situation here, and see a backpedaling hack comic responding to something on that video here. If you want the whole story, read it on Rogan’s site, it’s hilarious.

That’s pretty much the big story. It’s still unfolding, and it’s just a riot to follow. One can only hope that Louis CK will eventually do things to Dane Cook. Sure I could talk about Anna Nicole and Britney, but ugh, I’d have too much of an urge to eat a bullet if I ever dragged myself and my site down to that level of muck. That being said…..

~Enjoy

I’m sure you were getting tired of the old look, as I was. Considering that in the few short months I’ve had boroski.com, I’ve learned quite a bit more about web design. In order for you all to take me seriously, I figured I’d better create more of a ‘serious’ look to my site. I’m not trying to bad-mouth my original look by any means (the learning curve has to start somewhere, right). However, when compared to this, you can’t disagree that it was pretty rudimentary.

So, what can you expect with this new layout? Well, the same thing you expected with the old one. Some great links to visit, some outrageous videos to view, and some witty banter to read. You wouldn’t want it any other way would you? The updates will now be back on track every week, occurring either Sunday night or Monday (depending on my ‘demanding’ schedule that’s known as my life). So, you’ve got that going for you! This means you can shut off the bath water and put the razor blades away. You’ve got a reason to live again.

As for what’s on tap this week….

Well, I’m rather excited about the fact that my favorite comedian, Jim Norton is coming to town. I’ll be at his show on Friday night and there will be a recap posted in the blog. Hopefully, he’ll be taking pity on a nobody like myself and will pose for a photo with me. Other than that, I’ll be continuing my dominance of my circle of friends on Xbox Live (if you’re interested in buying one, read this first), as well as continuing the mission of getting the house all squared away (I moved in with Katherine in December in case you forgot).

So that being said, enjoy the featured content for the week, and thanks a lot for your patience during this entire redesign time. While my numbers weren’t quite as up there as I’ve grown accustomed to (understandably so), it’s good to know that through it all you didn’t wipe the site from your mind.

Now, on with the show!!
